Evolved Solutions 2018/2019 HSE objectives and Andy's personal commitments

Starting Evolved Solutions created a lot of opportunities, and none so more than in regards to how to manage duty of care, to myself and associates.

So I’d like to share my lessons and provide a bit of a background to Evolved solutions 2018/2019 HSE objectives and my personal commitments. You never know, it might inspire somebody……

Background

Safety is paramount; A personal passion driven by the hard lessons of lives lost on the Piper A & Piper B and far too frequently since. I first became a project manager 17 years ago, have managed large teams (typically 100 + green hats offshore) and have always been hands on in direct mentoring and interventions, which has (i hope) partly been responsible for the fact these projects never incurred an LTI, in the 17 years. I’m fully aware that i’m still constantly evolving and improving my safety mindset, but in my present role the focus has widened;

I located my office into a new build (beside my house, overlooking the beautiful Forvie nature reserve), while at the same time buying some adjacent land and with the landmark of turning 50, getting married and having a 4 year old to consider, a desire to finally get that life/work balance and health higher up my agenda.

As an independent ‘consultant’ (for the want of a better word!) with a limited number of direct reports and offshore activity, to what I’ve been used to, I had the opportunity to rethink my HSE focus; still keeping it top of agenda, but more relevant to the main risks & opportunities the organisation is now exposed.

See scorecard below. FYI I’ve scored the objectives, as they presently stand (they run from mid-summer, each year) and I was surprised to have not been required to defer many, when so reliant on such variables as the human body, tradesmen’s schedules and the weather!

And as a comic side; it’s a delicate business turning down work to afford yourself that life balance. The time proven approach of costing yourself out of the job, has proven to be too effective at times, so please get in touch (again), if you’d like more competitive 2019 rates!

Summary

In the process, I’ve learnt that I really didn’t give the ‘H’ part sufficient attention and Environmental objectives can be greater than simply being ‘compliant’, to be more personal and with a focus on reversing (rather than just minimising) the negative impact we have on the planet!

This has been a new working regime, requiring a re-think on my HSE focus, to take full advantage of the opportunities given. Hopefully I have taken a positive step, but would be delighted to hear others views/ideas etc.

Thanks for reading,

Andy
